The concept for the CD was the feeling of optimism about starting a new chapter in life - the old chapter being linked to a past relationship. It was important not to have any animosity, just a feeling of freedom and two lives separating.

An old one from the Chronicle: but I like it. It was when a scone factory in Barnsley was expanding and there were hopes for new jobs. I just really enjoy the expression on the little guy!

Brian Noble gives the Bradford Bulls a pep talk.

The Bradford Bulls have been in financial strife and Brian Noble, former coach/Britain coach and now columnist for the mag, was writing something about them...which no one knew what exactly it would be about - making the narrative for the illustration quite tough to come up with. I settled on the pep talk as it was fairly neutral and would be applicable no matter what happened at the time of publication.

The rise of summer rugby

Quite a tough brief...the editor wanted an illustration to go along with a story about the restructuring of lower level rugby league. After knocking around a few ideas I decided on this picture to show that summer rugby was coming - the most tangible thread to the tale.

This was one of the earlier ideas trying to capture the facts - the notion of the pyramid structure and the national amateur level holding up the top level game. But it wasn't working for me 

CD artwork: The Slow Blade

Band 'The Slow Blade' asked me to design a weird cd cover for them. The album title was taken from the film Dune, (luckily I knew it quite well). I love the visuals in that film, so it was a fertile ground for ideas. I drew a funny version of a Guild Navigator, adding the quintessential slow blade...the cheese knife!

Parky gets Narky (again)

A cartoon for the Chronicle. The topic was that Michael Parkinson had been given a new TV show, so I went for the most memorable image that people would know him from...and just suped it up a bit. The best part was that it drew a response from Parkinson himself - (who had threatened to sue the Chronicle a year or so earlier over an article we were running):

I was asked to redesign a logo for the Barnsley Chronicle. 'The Ferret' is a collection of funnies from the week. The editor needed something more modern, but we we needed something quite homely and pleasant. For this I chose a hand drawn aesthetic.
Coincidentally Prince Charles was due to visit the Chronicle so it was decided to tie the Ferret 'relaunch' in with this visit by getting him to choose a design. As the visit was imminent I had a weekend to turn out four or five designs, but at least he seemed to find them quite amusing!
